ARTIST, JANICE DONELSON, began her art career at the University of North Carolina and continued her graduate studies in Rome, Italy at the Accademia di Belle Arti. While studying at the academy she was challenged daily to develop her drawing skills. She sketched street scenes, models, and statues in Rome. This experience kindled her passion for pen and ink drawings. Competent drawing skills have served as a strong foundation in her art career. Living in Italy, speaking Italian, and absorbing the Italian culture and history added to the depth of her feelings as an artist. Janice returned to the USA to teach in high school in Nashville, Tennessee. Janice and her husband moved to Palo Alto, CA where her husband studied at Stanford University. During their 7 year stay she continued to study, attend workshops, and learn invaluable skills from 4 years of oriental brush painting. Carolyn Gawarecki, a gifted watercolorist has been a great help to Janice in watercolor skills. Janice enjoys experimenting now in all mediums. Dr. Gerald Brommer’s influence and valuable teaching skills have been so helpful and have encouraged her to experiment with many new techniques. As co-owner of a gallery, Janice taught workshops in faux art and texturing techniques for walls and floor cloths. She was chosen to represent Virginia for the White House during the Reagan and Clinton administrations. In her career she has owned and managed a cartoon based company called The Light Touch. The Frances Meyer Co. and Enesco International printed her designs and writings on a variety of products sold nationwide. Janice owned a commission based company Distinctive Paintings and Portraits which specialized in architectural renderings of private estates, homes, Band B’s and commercial buildings. Janice is also a devoted journalist. She co-authored a successful book Work Small and Learn Big in 2003. She was selected by the International Artist publishers to be one of five artists to represent the United States. In this book, she shares ideas, tips, and sketching techniques for traveling artists. Currently she is compiling text for her new book of over 400 pen and ink drawings. For the past ten years, Janice has been producing artwork for 25 cities in the USA for the Paris based company Yves Delorme. She travels often to Europe to sketch and paint (especially Italy and France). Her career is challenging and exciting and requires a supportive staff of studio help. For her engagements, her art career requires focus and daily devotion. Janice paints and teaches in her Vienna, Virginia studio which is open by appointment, (703) 281-2362
